Creating Typefaces
For the 2D project we focussed on making typefaces out of found objects and or collections of things that we have in our homes. I found myself struggling quite a bit during this project since I wasn't really able to see the capabilities of the different objects I had. Some of the original objects I had thought of include spices, stationary, lights, glasses, hair dye and piercings.
This First Idea I had was that I wanted to create a typeface using some of the different pieces of make-up that I had with me on the day that we received the brief.
I ended up not doing the whole alphabet with the makeup because I felt that it was a bit to fabricated. Instead of seeing the letters in the objects I was making the objects into letters. This however did give me some other ideas! |
Idea two!!
The next idea I had was to take Fairy Lights that I had up in the accommodation and use pins on the wall. This allowed me to wrap the lights around the pins to create the letters of the alphabet! This ended up being successful for some of the photos, I think this was mainly because I was not able to make multiple letters at once meaning some of the photos had the correct photo setting and some of the others did not. If I was to do this again I would use lights that have a different undertone since I think the blue of the lights take over the whole image. Idea three!!! The third idea that I had was that I wanted to take cinnamon and spread it all over my table and "write" the letters into the cinnamon. Yet again with this idea I ended up creating the letters fully which really is not the aim of this project. I think at this point in the project I was really struggling since I was genuinely struggling to understand the brief, I was unable to see letters the the things that are around me. This did continue for another set of letters... Idea Four!!!!
The next idea that I used had the same issues as the others since at this point I was still struggling to see where I could take the objects without having to fabricate then specifically into the letters themselves. I decided to ditch thinking out of the box and use one of the main things on my desk that I use every single day, highlighters! I want to take highlighters and make them into a typeface, this is in rebellion to all of the teachers who said I would highlight to much. Well fuck you teachers I am going to highlight everything and you cant bloody stop me. |

My final idea for this project was to wake all of the random pieces of jewellery I had in my UNI room and attempted to make them into type using the natural shapes of the ring and the other pieces but still being able to manipulate them enough to create the letters. The only problem I can across was the facts that I had no pieces I would have been able to make the letter s with or most letters with the big curves in so I had the idea of taking chains like from necklaces and manoeuvre them into the shapes that are difficult to find naturally in these types of things.
Since this is the font I decided to go with as my final idea I wanted to make sure I had some cool name ideas for the typeface. Originally I was thinking of going down the route of a jewellery box but thought that it sounded too simple. Then the thought of pandoras box seemed pretty cool but didn't quite match the vibe I am going for. Since it did not quite match I wanted to do some brainstorming. when doing this I came up with the idea of magpies, this is because of the fact that magpies love shiny things and are known for hoarding thing, so I wanted to take this idea further and make the magpies nest the main focus of the typeface.
This was the most successful idea since it allowed me to take something that I use all of the time and create something with them that I will be able to use in the future. This project has given me idea that might be very useful for when I want to open my own artsy business. Since using calligrapher allows you to completely customise and create my own typeface which can be used in almost anything.
